In the latest fiasco involving Obamacare, nearly $3 billion of payments were made to either the wrong people, or in the wrong amounts. A recent Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) Inspector General (IG) report has concluded that “the internal control deficiencies that we identified limited (the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) CMS’s ability to make accurate payments.”
Furthermore, the DHHS has never put a system in place to ensure these subsidy payments would ever be secure, paid in the exact amounts or sent to the right people. In particular, there was nothing in place to validate the data concerning new enrollees nor did the CMS apply its payment criteria in all cases.
